We May Not Be Big But We're Small!
At the beginning of this year, Stuart McLean made a list of the places in Canada that he hasn’t been to and would like to visit. The place at the top of the list was somewhere he has been trying to visit (unsuccessfully) for years. This summer he finally did it and he liked it so much that he has dedicated an entire show to it today on The Vinyl Cafe.
We are talking about The Cabot Trail. The highway that circumvents the northern corner of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; 300 kilometers of what some people say is the most beautiful road in this country...in fact, some people say it is the most beautiful road in North America.
The Cabot Trail concert features musical guests Rose Cousins and Raylene Rankin.
Vinyl Cafe pal Reid Jamieson has a big Vancouver CD release show coming up. Since so many of you enjoyed his singing on the Windsor concert and the Train show, we thought we'd let you know about it. Here are the details - more info at his website.

A while ago on The Vinyl Cafe we talked about a very cool website put together by Collections Canada called 'The Virtual Gramophone: Canadian Historical Sound Recordings'.
You can check it out for yourself here:
Recently on The Vinyl Cafe, Stuart talked to the owners/operators of some about his favourite Canadian record stores.
Here is a list of his favourites:
Fred's in St. John's, NFLD
Back Alley Music in Charlottetown, PEI
Backstreet Records in Saint John, NB
Criminal Records in Toronto, ON
Soundscapes in Toronto, ON
Dr. Disc in Hamilton, ON
Fascinating Rhythm in Nanaimo, BC
Blackbyrd Myoozik in Edmonton, AB
Megatunes in Calgary, AB
Zulu Records in Vancouver, BC
Here is one of our favourite moments from the Vinyl Cafe: The incredible story of Roger Woodward and Niagara Falls.
We often have people asking us about some of our favourite things: Where we like to get coffee in Montreal? Where do we like to stop for lunch in St. John's? Who do we think makes the best cinnamon buns in the country (there is no clear winner in this category!)
So, we've decided to keep an ongoing list here on this website. We'll be adding to this constantly, so be sure to check back.
QUEBEC
MONTREAL
1) We loved the coffee in Montreal. Some of our favourite places were Cafe Olympico on St. Viateur (also known to locals as 'Open Da Night'...in reference to an old sign that used to say 'Open Day & Night'). We also loved Cafe Myriad on Rue Mackay.
ONTARIO
MANITOULIN ISLAND
1) Mum's Bakery in Mindemoya has amazing homemade apple fritters and cinnamon buns.
2) Also in Mindemoya - the Manitoulin Coffee Shop makes a pretty decent latte. As far as we could tell, it's the only espresso on the Island. They have a Rancillio machine (for those of you who care)
3) The School House Restaurant in Providence Bay is fantastic. Good service, great food and a nice atmosphere (the restaurant is in, you guessed it, an old schoolhouse that is tucked underneath a stand of tall pine trees). Stuart had a wonderful piece of beef tenderloin when we we were there and Jess had oysters and shrimp.
TORONTO
1) The Fish Store on College Street in Toronto makes one of the best sandwiches we've ever had. Their fresh fish is pretty great too.
